Huddersfield
One of Huddersfield's famous sons is the former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson, a statue stands as a tribute to him overlooking St George's Square. Thousands of visitors flock to nearby Marsden to visit the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre. This refurbished transhipment warehouse on the banks of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal provides the ideal place to sample a boat ride or simply immerse yourselves in the history of the British Waterways.
Huddersfield Town Hall is particularly impressive. Inside you will find a richly decorated, wonderfully preserved, 1200 Victorian seated concert hall, famous for choral and brass concerts and Christmas performances of Handel’s Messiah. For specialist and unusual shops visit the three floors of the Byram Arcade, the entrance of which has a notable wrought iron canopy. On a more cultural note, why not spend some time perusing the Huddersfield Art Gallery, where you will find works by Francis Bacon, L.S Lowry and Henry Moore to name but a few.
There are plenty of pubs, restaurants (visit Grappolo for fine Italian food), wine bars and cafes to choose from. Accommodation ranges from good value bed and breakfasts to elegant hotels. Outside of the town are self catering holiday cottages which can be used for short breaks.
Huddersfield is south west of Leeds and Bradford, less than 3 miles from the M62.
