Bridge over the River Tees

Piercebridge

The Roman fort of Piercebridge lies just a few miles west of Darlington, north of Richmond, just off the A67. Named after its renowned Roman Bridge, Piercebridge is a fascinating place for those wanting to discover more about the county's Roman heritage – it is estimated that Romans resided here from 70AD to at least the 5th century. The village green is the best place for explorers to head, as part of the Roman fort actually lies beneath the green. If Roman ruins aren’t your scene, remember you are only a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for walking, of the 12th century Barnard Castle for exploring. Finally, whilst in the area you must pay a visit to the Piercebridge Organic Farm Shop and Café which was recently featured in Rick Stein’s Food Heroes of Great Britain for excellence in organic produce.
