Northallerton
Northallerton is a pleasant market town, drawing people from miles around to visit the twice-weekly market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Just outside the town, a memorial stone marks the site of the Battle of the Standard where the English defeated the Scots in 1138. Northallerton can also be linked with Charles I after his imprisonment there and Charles Dickens who stayed at the Fleece Inn in the 19th century.
It is a busy market town with all the usual high street shops, cafes and restaurants. There is varied accommodation ranging from small hotels to comfortable bed and breakfasts; some of the pubs also offer rooms.
Yorkshire is famous for Taylor's tea; this established company also owns 6 tea rooms that are equally famous - Betty's. Take the opportunity of going to the one in Northallerton for a leisurely meal and a unique experience. There are other restaurants in the town serving all kinds of food, all good value.
There is a Birds of Prey and Conservation Centre, at Sion Hill Hall, one of the last great houses to be built after the First World War. Alternatively try Lightwater Valley; a popular theme park and perfect for a day out with the family.
Northallerton is located between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North York Moors National Park at the crossroads of the A684 and the A167. It is about 30 miles form York and 22 miles from Middlesbrough.
